What Holton said in their 1956 catalog:

"No. 122 Bb Sousaphone - Model 122 was designed and built with the idea of offering a medium weight, but first quality bass in a larger bore thus providing tone of a depth and carrying power previously found only in instruments too heavy for school or other use where weight was a handicap. We believe that we have succeeded outstandingly in this objective for Model 122 has more power, more tone, more really satisfying bass performance than all except the very largest and heaviest instruments."

Sousaphones can be intimidating instruments due to their size, their weight, and most often, their price. New sousaphones from reputable brands often carry price tags starting in the $8k range, so we're excited to be able to offer a great used sousaphone that is perfect for anyone shopping with a tight budget. It comes with everything you need to plug in and play - instrument, neck & bits, mouthpiece, and case. It's not the best looking horn, but used sousaphones rarely are! It's a great player, so come and check it out for yourself!

This horn arrived here in rough shape, and took quite a bit of work to prep for use! Our professional brass tech worked out a bunch of dents in the outer branch, the bell flare, and the throat. Some braces needed to be resoldered to stay secure, and the horn also got a thorough cleaning inside and out. Additionally, the piston stems were having some alignment issues, so we made new stems for all 3 pistons to keep everything consistent and even. After all that work, it's good to go! We recommend play-testing here in store before buying, as vintage sousas respond in different ways to different players.
