What an incredibly cool horn! This Conn New York Wonder is an unbelievably versatile vintage cornet, equipped to play in A, Bb, or C using the included tuning attachments and mouthpipes. Any collector of vintage cornets would be thrilled with this instrument, as it's complete all the way down to the original case it shipped in. This comes from an era in Conn's history where they were selling instruments out of their New York showroom. This horn was manufactured in their new factory in Elkhart, IN, and then shipped and sold in New York, and was available exclusively through that outlet. This outfit includes what we believe to the original case, the original lyre, 3 leadpipes (Bb, A, and C), "Vocal C" tuning attachment, and the original straight mute, along with two vintage Conn Liberati Model 1 cornet mouthpieces, one of them likely to have shipped with this cornet.
It may go with outsaying, but it is worth mentioning that this horn is 125 years old at the time of this writing, so there may be some intonation challenges for players when they first get into this horn, especially when changing leadpipes. Everything in this outfit is cutting-edge from 1899, and has aged nicely, but cornets aren't manufactured with all these features anymore for a reason. We see this horn going to a collector of vintage brass instruments, or to someone playing in a band that needs era-specific instruments.
Cosmetically, this cornet is in great shape. There are a few spots of plating wear around the valve section, the ferrules on the leadpipe receiver, and the C tuning attachment, and a few light scratches on the valves as well, but overall, this horn is in great condition. The state of the engraving tells us that this is the original silver plate from the late 1800's, and the only significant repair this horn ever underwent was likely a solder job on the C tuning attachment, as the braces look to have some solder marks on them from a previous service done prior to its arrival here. All our professional brass tech needed to do for this horn is give it a cleaning in our ultrasonic tank and polish all the parts. It's a real find for cornet lovers, so come check it out today!
