We're excited to have another home-grown trumpet on our shelves! Harry B Jay made trumpets in Chicago from the early 1900's up until the late 1920's, and they innovated in ways that many trumpet manufacturers did not at the time (reversed leadpipes, step bores, etc). Harry's designs were good enough to attract some pretty heavy hitters, and the legendary Louis Armstrong actually played on a Harry B Jay cornet before he switched over to trumpet!
Bringing up another important name in the trumpet community, this specific HB Jay Columbia trumpet was owned by none other than former Chicago Symphony Orchestra asst. principal trumpet, William Scarlett. After William retired, he became a bit of a collector of trumpets and trumpet hardware, and this one was purchased from Sid Sherman's Instrument Company on Wabash - the case features a vintage luggage tag to prove it.
This horn features a beautiful gold plate finish, and the gorgeous engraving on the bell stretches from the bell flare all the way back to the crook. The gold plate is very much intact, and is only showing minor spots of wear on the underside of the bell near the valve block, and faint wear beginning to form on some of the slide crooks. There's evidence of some previous soldering work on the pull knobs attached to the 1st and 2nd slide crooks, and a patch was added onto the leadpipe at some point in this horn's life. Besides the aforementioned blemishes, this horn is scratch and dent-free. Our professional brass technician cleaned and polished this horn before bringing it up for sale, and it's in truly beautiful condition, especially for a horn made in 1917. The additional slides and receivers are also in great shape. The case is also original, and we'd recommend seeking out a replacement case. The included original case is still very functional, but this horn deserves a little more protection.
The gold plate finish will give this trumpet a lot of warmth and color, and the .450" bore combined with the reverse leadpipe will give players a lot of flexibility to play in both ensembles and in solo settings. Come check it out before it disappears! This horn won't be here long!
