What Olds said in their 1950 catalog:

"The SPECIAL trombone is designed for maximum comfort over long hours of use and is characteristic of Olds meticulous workmanship.

The light, strong, tubular braces of the SPECIAL trombone are accurately spaced to fit the hand. The size and conical proportions are planned for "brilliant" trombone quality in both high and low registers . . . and for tremendous tone power. Inside tubes are round, nickel silver chromium plated."

Olds instruments have enjoyed a major resurgence in popularity over recent years! All their flagship models have proven to be desirable in today's ensembles given their excellent build quality (especially those out of their Los Angeles factory). Military-issue horns were made with extra-special care, and those who wound up with one to keep usually made it a life-long instrument. This one received excellent care by its previous owner, and is in stellar cosmetic and playing condition.

The Special sits right in the middle of the Olds "hierarchy," using better materials and craftsmanship than the Ambassador, but not quite the same build quality as the Super or the Recording. That makes this horn incredibly versatile and reliable. Current Olds Special trombone owners seem to think this instrument is best suited in a big band or other jazz ensemble, but come by and test-drive it to come to your own conclusion!

This horn arrived in great shape, and needed only basic work to be prepped for sale. Our professional brass technician cleaned the horn in our ultrasonic tank, and gave it a hand polish. They also worked out some minor dents in the bell throat and tuning slide crook. We can't find any plating wear anywhere on this instrument, and there are only a few minor surface scratches on the bell section - otherwise, this horn is in excellent condition.
