Double bell euphoniums are noticed primarily for their novelty now, however between 1890-1920, American brass manufactures were at the peak of producing double bell Euphoniums, and the Buescher model 49 double bell Euphonium is a one of a kind! The history of Duplexes (another term for double euphoniums) is linked to the American military brass band tradition and band leaders like Patrick Gilmore and John Philip Sousa.

The Buescher company designed the model 49 for recordings and radio broadcasting. It features two adjustable bells and 5 valves. Players will use the 4 valves to play but once engaging the 5th valve, player's sound will come out of the small bell. Having the two bells allows players to have two distinct sounds; the large bell has a mellow sound compared to the small bell, which sounds like a bright trombone. Players can also be their own echo by switching between the large and small bell!

The Model 49 was in great condition when it arrived and only need minor work. Our professional brass technician removed dents on the small bell, and the body was ultrasonically cleaned, while the bells were washed separately without such strong chemicals. Being an instrument from the 1920's, it has been through a lot. Minor scratches from use can be found throughout the horn, especially on the outer branch. There's also evidence of re-soldering on a few braces between valves. There's also some noticeable plating wear on the inner branch and on near the bell stem, and also on small bell near the throat. These cosmetic issues aside, this is such a fun instrument to play!

So come on by and play a piece of American Band history today!
