The SML Rev. D alto saxophone, produced by the French manufacturer Strasser-Marigaux-Lemaire (SML) in the 1950s, is a highly regarded vintage instrument known for its unique blend of French craftsmanship and powerful sound. The silver-plated version with a gold wash bell represents a premium finish option, combining durability with aesthetic elegance. The Rev. D model, though not officially named by SML (a designation later adopted by collectors), was the immediate precursor to the famed Gold Medal series, which won accolades at the 1953 International Music Expo in The Hague. This model features rolled tone holes, a switchable G#/C# mechanism, and a 4-slot neck tenon receiver for improved stability—innovations that set it apart from contemporaries like the Selmer Mark VI .

The Rev. D’s design reflects SML’s commitment to precision, with hand-forged keywork and adjustable stack screws for optimal regulation. While production numbers were limited (around 15,000 across all models), the Rev. D remains sought after for its dark, focused tone and ergonomic innovations, bridging the gap between the refined Selmer sound and the robust projection of American brands like Conn.

The sax only needed very minor adjustments. It is in good playing and cosmetic condition. Stop by Horn Stash to try this sax out!
